I don’t believe it – once again I’ve let myself be talked into doing an event in Second Life. But this time it’s even worse – I’ll be hosting a combined second life and real-life event, and in effect acting as the medium between physical and virtual realities.
The only compensation is that the subject is a really juicy one – the Seven Deadly Sins!

On March 8 – Fat Tuesday appropriately – I’ll be indulging myself talking about the Seven Deadly Sins of Techno-Complacency to a combined audience in Second Life, and in real life, here at the University of Michigan. And just to ice the cake so to speak, it looks like we’ll be webcasting the event as well.
If you want to indulge as well, the event is from 2:00 – 3:00 PM Eastern Time on March 8 – 1655 SPH Crossroads if you are in town, or Second Life if you are not (I’ll post the webcast link later). But be warned – only the real-life crowd will be getting Deadly Sin Cupcakes (seriously)!
The blurb for the event – which as you might imagine is not going to be that straight laced – goes something like this:
Science and technology are transforming our world faster than ever before. Yet for all our technological brilliance, are we really in control of our destiny? Do we have the wherewithal to steer a course between a future techno-heaven and techno-hell? Or are we so caught up in our technological infatuation that we have become insensitive to the future consequences of our actions?
Inspired by the “Seven Deadly Sins” of the ancient world, Andrew Maynard takes a wry look at the challenges of using science and technology to build a sustainable future – while avoiding the “fiery pit” of techno-failure. Among his seven deadly sins of a techno-complacent society: Sucker Syndrome, soppy thinking, and blind faith.”

And the seven sins? They are:
- Widget Envy. (Envy)
- Sucker-syndrome. (Gluttony)
- Soppy thinking. (Greed)
- Megalomania. (Lust)
- Techno-hubris. (Pride)
- Blind faith. (Sloth)
- Intolerance. (Wrath)
PS – the version of my bio being used for the event should be taken with a pinch of salt – a pinch of sinful hubris possibly crept in there somewhere in the spirit of things!
